You must have permission from anyone who 's land and disturb you. Transgress is illegal. No you can not use a metal detector into a battlefield of civil war - because government property - you'd need an act of Congress to dig. The best idea is to contact a local store that sells metal detector - see if they have a list of clubs, organizations and so on. who "digs" — thus set an important learning experience and a list of rules / regulations on where and when you can use your metal detector. Possibly dig on large farms in northern VA where the armies were camped / etc. combative skirmishes. These clubs / organizations / stores that sell this equipment would have a lot of information. Look in the Yellow Pages for stores that sell the metal notes that the equipment and give them a call - perhaps you can be placed on a list of addresses for the upcoming organized hunts.

Unfortunately, I do not know for certain fields of battle. But a good place to use a metal detector is the oldest deposits of the outside as inside an area resedential. These areas are the best thing because most of the land is the dirt, grass. Even if you needed to find a battlefield, most likely will be in a park condition. And from what I heard, most of the old battlefields are historic sites or parks condition. And I am quite sure both places forbid the use of metal detectors. If you find an old warehouse resedential, ask permission before you go.
